In the process of using diesel generator sets, there is often a problem of excessive fuel consumption. However, no problems were found during the inspection of the diesel generator set, and the specific cause cannot be found during maintenance. So, what are the reasons that can affect the fuel consumption of the diesel generator set?
Oil generally enters the combustion chamber through the gap between the piston ring and the ring groove, as well as the gap between the valve and the guide tube. The direct reason for its entry is that a piston ring rapidly drops in speed near the top dead center, throwing the lubricating oil attached to it into the combustion chamber. So, the clearance between the piston ring and the piston, the oil scraping amount and ability of the piston ring, the pressure and oil viscosity in the combustion chamber are closely related to the oil consumption. If high fuel consumption is found, the following checks can be conducted to identify the problem and provide a quick solution.
1. Check if the sealing gaskets at the connections between the diesel engine body and the gear compartment cover, the large plate on one side of the driving wheel, the rear cover, and the cover are intact, and if the screws at the connections are loose. If there is oil leakage at the position of the frame, it is necessary to check the oil, mainly the front end of the oil housing on the same side as the driving wheel. Generally, it is because the screws on the base are loose, causing the driving wheel to rub against the angle iron of the frame that protects the oil housing for a long time under the pulling of the triangular belt, resulting in a gap and causing oil leakage.
2. The wear of the diesel engine valve guide causes additional oil loss in the unit.
3. Engine wear causes longitudinal pulling marks on the cylinder liner of the diesel engine, with the cylinder diameter and piston side clearance exceeding the specified value. As a result, the supporting force of the piston ring decreases, resulting in unclean oil scraping. Alternatively, due to the broken internal support torsion spring in the oil ring, the oil cannot be scraped clean and participates in combustion, making it difficult to start the diesel engine. Blue smoke is emitted from the exhaust pipe, and the respirator sprays oil severely, resulting in additional oil consumption.
